You were just a child, full of possibility.
Always made me smile, all your childish eyes could see.
They said, “gotta play the part we say you gotta play
instead of gazing at the stars.”

So you turned your eyes down to the narrow path they led.
Focused on the “right” ground, you forgot the stars overhead.
Don’t know how the house they built of mud and gilt ever
could hold all the love I have for you.

Beyond the books they never read,
beyond the words they only said,
beyond what’s good enough for them to call my own,
after the altars crumble down,
after the stained glass shatters,
the light will break through, and you’ll see:
I’ll still be loving you.

Now you’re on your own underneath a boundless sky.
Still, you’re not alone. All their condemnation was a lie.
Trust me: when you closed that door, you opened yourself to
the freedom I’ve been hoping you would find.
